Fine. You talked me into it: Rachel Chooses a Candidate, Part 1.

I've been getting a lot of mail and links on other blogs telling me I suck for not talking about politics anymore. All right then. You want politics? I'll talk about goddamn politics.

The very first thing that needs to be said is that I hate most politicians. I just HATE them. It's the mannerisms and the tone of voice and the whole general smarmy fake bullshit attitude. The way their spouses are always so "perfect" and cheesy, the way they trot out their children as though their spawn makes them a more credibly decent human being. The way none of them are capable of maintaining the same stand on anything over time, the way they attack each other when competing for a nomination and then band together when fighting the other party - it's so fucking dishonest. Why don't I tell you something you don't already know?

So, that said, I still believe in the system and I vote in every election. In the past, I'd pretty much just voted against Democrats, because typically, they're rotten socialists without any sort of realistic grasp on the nature of humanity or the facts of human history. Not that Republicans are much better, but at least usually they're more likely to lower taxes and fight wars that need to be fought. Plus their men are manlier. I mean, John Edwards - are you kidding me? I've seen more masculine guys marching in Gay Pride parades.

But I'm feeling frisky now, and I've decided, for the first time ever, to actually learn about all the candidates' records and positions, and to vote on the issues rather than who pisses me off the least. I'm still pretty sure I'll pick a Republican, though. I watched most of the Democrat candidacy debates last week and spent most of the time in full scoff mode. You could have played a drinking game where you took a shot every time I said, "Would you listen to these assholes?" Want to hear something deeply unpleasant? I actually liked Hillary Clinton. I threw up a little bit as I typed that. But everything's relative, my friends, and I thought she made all those guys look like serious chumps. It probably wasn't very hard. Sunny could have done the same thing.

I missed the Republican debate the other night, but I found this site, which gives you a rundown of each guy's votes and positions on pretty much everything. Now, a lot of people have asked me what I think of Fred Thompson, and I think the assumption around the blogs I read is that he's the guy to support.

But I'm not so sure. For example, he voted 'yes' on limiting the self-employment health deduction, and voted 'no' on health savings accounts. What the fuck? I have an HSA and it has changed my life. Seriously! I have my entire deductible sitting in an interest-bearing, tax-free account and I can use that money for all kinds of things, including contact lenses and dental exams, and my premiums are low. It's the greatest thing ever, for a self-employed person who has to carry an individual policy.

And why would he vote for limiting the self-employment health deduction? If there is a good answer, I would love to hear it. I'm not sure everyone understands the tax hit for self-employed people. For those who don't already know this: if you're employed by someone else, your employer pays half of your FICA tax - you each pay 7.65%. A self-employed worker has to pay the entire 15.3%. Half of that amount is deductible, but that doesn't help much. It's still a gigantic kick in the pants, dollar-wise. So even with all the various deductions I can take for my home office, health premiums, et cetera, I still pay a lot more tax than I would if I had an employer. So believe me, any help Congress can give is very, very important to people like me. Thus, Fred Thompson loses serious points on this one.

He also voted 'no' on increasing tax deductions for college tuition. I paid for my education myself, and again, it was very helpful to me tax-wise to be able to deduct as much of that as possible. As usual, if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone can tell me why.

So anyway, am I liking Mr. Fred Thompson? Not so much.

How about John McCain. His position on abortion is a problem. I don't have a strong opinion about this issue, I really and truly don't. The fact is, I've spent the last almost-20 years vigorously striving to remain non-pregnant at all times, and I've been 100% successful. So, even though I'm a woman, I really don't feel entitled to take a firm stand on abortion. I have no idea what it feels like to be unhappily pregnant, I have no idea what it feels like to have a tiny human living inside my body, I have absolutely no everlovin' idea WHAT I would think or what I would feel was right or wrong if I ever had been preggers without wanting to be. So, frankly, I've never given it much thought one way or another. HOWEVER. I have given a lot of thought to human nature and what people have been doing for tens of thousands of years, and if I had to say what I think the policy should be, I'd say that abortion should remain legal, with reasonable restrictions. McCain supports repealing Roe v. Wade, and I'm totally not down with that.

Otherwise, not too shabby. He believes in evolution, supports the death penalty, supports competency testing for teachers. But just like Thompson, he voted 'yes' on limiting self-employed health deductions and 'no' on medical savings accounts. What gives? What's their reasoning on this?

Okay who else. Ahhh yes, Newt. Good ol' bible-thumping Newt. There's really not much info on him on that site, but do you know what? I just don't really like this guy, never have. I don't think he'll get the nomination anyway so I'm not gonna blah-blah about him.

Romney, Huckabee, Hagel - yawn. I don't even care.

Wanna know who I like? I think it just might be one Mr. Rudolph Giuliani. I can't find anything on his list that makes me want to sock him in the mouth, and I love his attitude. He's the only one who talks like an actual human being, for one thing.

So. That was a boring post. Cut me some slack, I only started to pay attention to any of this about 24 hours ago. But I'm already plotting how to make Giuliani In '08 merchandise with my floating baby head on it. Which is probably stupid because likely, one of the more conservative guys'll get the nomination, and they'll run against Hillary, and it'll be one hell of an interesting election. So I promise to pay attention and to blog about it like a good girl.

Single issue voter here - will they or won't they support your individual right to keep and bear arms?

Rudy - bwaahhhhhh NFW
Johnny Mac - Not a chance.
Fred - I think he might.

With that in mind - now how do you vote? :)

JohnS [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Guiliani never saw a gun control law he didn't like. He *claims* to have changed his mind. I'm not willing to trust him.

You suck for talking about politics! I want more posts about medical transcription and drainage ditches!

Just trying to balance the scales a bit.

Lissa [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Regarding the abortion thing, I see a difference between repeating Roe v. Wade and abortion being illegal. (I'm obviously qualified to write that, mind you, 'cause I took a Civil Liberties class in college -- snort.) I think Roe was bad law -- I don't think a right to privacy is in the Constitution, either by words or by implication, so the Supremes were wrong to pretend there was. I say send the issue back to the States -- if people in, say, Indiana need an abortion and Indiana voters decide not to legalize, they can come visit me in Boston. Or, actually vote in a Constitutional Amendment that guarantees the right to an abortion.

Glad to see a post on politics. I'm not one to complain about what people choose to post on their own blog, but I have been quietly scrolling past the other stuff hoping you would get to politics eventually.

McCain is out because he supports regulation of political speech. That is surely an absolute deal-breaker. The others might not vow to repeal it, but McCain went to extreme lengths to enact the damn thing.

I like Giuliani too. I agree with the previous poster that his u-turn on gun laws is probably just an outright lie, but he's still well ahead of the others. Don't care one way or another on Roe v Wade. It should be left to the states but there are more important factors in appointing judges than worrying too much about that.

derrell [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Its been sort of hard for me to really get into the politics for the last year or two. However long ago the illegal aliens started protesting for their rights. WTF, what rights? I stayed so pissed off all of the time that finally I even quit listening to radio stations that played any news. Music only for me, baby, did my blood pressure good. Now with the elections coming up for 08 I've started paying attention again and guess what freakin' illegal aliens, still. I've pretty much lost faith in either party. They are all for the most part as you said, mealy mouthed sacks of puss that care much more for their own position than for anyone who put them there. That is unless you happened to donate a truck full of money to them then you might be able to squeeze em' other than that regular folks are just SOL.

The abortion thing in my opinion is much too big of an issue with republicans. They will kick someone that sounds good otherwise to the curb on that one issue. I realize that it is very important to many folks, but I don't see it as being a make or break issue. So long as we don't start in with mandatory abortions to reduce carbon emissions I think we're OK. Personal opinion on it is that it should revert to the states, the less federal government is involved in anything the better off we all are.

Sorry for venting but got started and almost couldn't stop. Deleted another two paragraphs. Great to have you back Rachel and really I don't mind reading about the dogs and the pickle jar explosions. It lightens my day wonderfully to be able to come home and sit down to see what Rachel has been up to.

Ith [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Rachel! I had no idea you were blogging again! Now I need to go read your archives. It's so good to 'see' you! I missed you.

Phelps [TypeKey Profile Page]:

You discount your opinion on abortion because you've never been pregnant, but I think that is a perfect reason why people should give some deference to your opinion. You know exactly how easy or hard it is to not get pregnant. There is no denying that if the unwanted pregnancies never happen in the first place, there is no issue.

Thompson - Giuliani would make one hell of a ticket.

It would put NY and CA into play for the first time since Reagan left office. Not that we would WIN those states, but the democRats would find themselves suddenly having to actually spend money and campaign time there to assure wins. That would mean less resources to put into states like FL, OH, PA, MI, WI... The donks would still win CA and NY, but would lose a number of battleground states they need in order to win the electoral vote.

I like it.

Then Duncan Hunter can be the next Sec Def, and Tom Tancredo next Sec State...

Bad Penny [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Overturning Roe v. Wade would not make abortion illegal. It would return it to the status it had before Roe v. Wade, which is that each state had its own laws on abortion.

"Jane Roe" lived in a state where abortion was not allowed, and she thought it was wrong that people that lived in other states had the "right" to an abortion and people in her state did not.

I agree with you that abortion should be legal and there should be some restrictions on it. Abortion at 4 weeks I can live with; but at 30 weeks? Not so much.

wendy [TypeKey Profile Page]:

OK, thanks for your opinion on Fred. I obviously need to do more research. Now, I am going to give you some information that I have never shared with anyone on a blog or otherwise (except a few intimate friends and my family) I have had an abortion and then later in life had 2 children. I regret my decision every day. I was stupid for not having taken the precautions. I still believe that a woman has a right to choose. But, I try every time it comes up to change their mind. The guilt is something that never goes away. Here is the other pisser..... My oldest child passed away at the age of 23. Imagine wondering if that is my "penance" (sp?) for what I did????? It depends on your belief system. OK, I shared more than I should. I just want women to be informed that there can be ramifications whether it be mental or physical to that decision. But it is their life, not mine. I am still undecided as to when life really begins. Sorry Rachel, I am so glad you are back because I L-O-V-E your blog and missed you when you were on "hiatus"

Lance de Boyle [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Wendy,

It's not my bidness (as we say down south), but any God that would take away your child for something you did 25 years before is hardly a god worth caring about.

It's more likely that God GAVE you kids DESPITE your having had abortions.

I believe it's called a blessing.

THAT was the lesson for you. To be a mother, and to make every day of it count---which no one can doubt that you did.

Yeah I am with you Rachel. I Rather Like Rudy or Fred. Would love to seem them run together. Quite frankly though, since my boy Powell won't run I don't fucking care about the whole shaboodle, and will just pull a lever for something non-Democrat.

In a sick, and rather twisted way I do rather wish Hilary would gets the nod and win. That would leave such a bad taste in the mouth of even the Dems we would have a Rep prez for the next 5 terms.

Have fun ;)!

PS: I hate organized political chatter near as much as I hate organized religious chatter. Don't give in to peer pressure Rach!

Dick [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Endorse Rudy if ya want, but he is nothing but a mouthpiece riding 9/11 who will take away your right to bear arms.
I have no use for the man.

Run Fred!

Elijah [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Haha.

"As long as he isn't promising tits on a bull I'll vote for him".

"Thompson - Giuliani would make one hell of a ticket."

That would be my dream, in that order. The perfect balance of the traditional conservative (Thompson) and the social liberal (Giuliani).

Sigivald [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Note that in practice, your employer isn't really paying half your FICA.

By which I mean they are doing so in the accounting sense, but what they're really doing is giving you a lower salary/hourly than they would have otherwise, and paying half that FICA out of that.

(Why? Because they're not in the business of paying expenses like that out of their own profits rather than passing the cost on to someone; and raising prices hurts competitiveness more than lowering wages a bit... especially when the other companies also "pay" their half of FICA the exact same way.)

Self-employed, you're not so much paying more, as realising that a notionally lower salary isn't quite as low as it was, since it included FICA, almost like a "benefit" (though I'm loathe to consider something like FICA a benefit package, it has similar effective-pay effects).

OBloodyHell [TypeKey Profile Page]:

> How about John McCain.

Rachel, you forgot that he was clearly totally in favor of the abortion called McCain-Feingold. That alone is pretty much enough to shoot him down in my book. I mean, what part of "Shall make no law..." does he find unclear?

Dick [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Rachel, everybody knows that Pirates would mop the floors with Ninjas.

Only thing that REALLY bugs me about Rudy is his gun-control history. Me, I kinda like the second amendment, as much as it has been hobbled and eroded to this point. He's a bit to cavalier with it, to put it politely.

Truth is, I could live with any of the "R" candidates if it meant that they can and would beat any of the "D" candidates. I don't like any of them in the least.

Hillary is well practiced and at least as "slick" as her husband. I remember when I first saw Bill and heard him speak (on TV, I wasn't there in person) my first reaction was don't trust this man farther than you can throw him. And he was a fairly big man, so it would be difficult to get any distance on him. I get the same vibe off of Hillary, only a little worse.

I think Hillary is a bigger socialist than Bill, but is playing centrist to get elected. She is probably going to be the one the Republicans have to beat, IMHO.

I'm leaning Fred. But in the end, the imperative is that the "D" candidate loses. If we think Fred can't do that and Rudy can, I'll throw behind Rudy with ya.

Hi Rachel--welcome back.

Sure a lot folks not paying attention to issues. Everyone needs to check-out teamtancredo and push for the underdog.

Tom Tancredo is the only reason most other candidates are even blowin' smoke about securing our borders, not granting amnesty, and enforcing existing laws. He has been pushing this to be the number-one issue for the past ten years. He is pro-2d Amendment and the only candidate to promise, if elected, to free our Border Patrol Agents now being held as political prisoners.
