Is Ann Coulter really necessary?

I've had a bellyful of that screechy nutburger this week. She's been on EVERY political talk show I've seen and my loathing of her grows daily.

Yeah, I lean Republican because I hate the Democrats more. And yeah, sometimes Coulter says something useful and makes a good point. But damn, she is one snotty bitch. And not in the appealing way, more like in the brittle, freezing-cold way that makes me want to shove one of her "Beverly Hills 90210" black minidresses down her throat and tell her to just SHUT HER TRAP FOR ONCE IN HER GODFORSAKEN LIFE.

Why does she have to be such a bitch? That's what I want to know. I mean, you can be assertive and clever and daring, knock yourself out sister, but seriously. The eye-rolling, the hair-flipping, the sighing -- it's all so incredibly high school. I was watching her talk about Feinstein's idea to revive the Fairness Doctrine on O'Reilly the other night, and it seemed like every time the camera was on her but she wasn't talking, she was literally using the monitors to primp herself.

She's such an attention whore. I think that's the only reason she says the outrageous thing she does, is because it makes people look at her, and because she doesn't care that most people looking at her want to break her face with their fist.

And why am I expected to think she's awesome just because she's a conservative? Eff that. I think she does more damage to the Republicans than good, I really do. Her popularity on the right is precisely one of the reasons I've been so turned off by the right in the last few years. Trust me, I'm even more turned off by the left, seeing as how in their corner, they've got about a thousand talking idiot heads for every one Ann Coulter, but still. Come on people. Is she the best we can do? Really? Michelle Malkin could clean the floor with Coulter in any contest from beauty to brains to basic class, why isn't SHE the most popular conservative woman on TV? Explain it to me.

Plus, check this out. The Edwards campaign makes money every time she drops one of her hateful-bitch bombs. She called him a "faggot" and they called the resulting surge in donations "Coulter Cash." Nice job, psycho. Now she "joked" that she wishes he'd die in a terrorist attack, and they're gonna wipe their tears away with hundred dollar bills.

And by the way. I know boys like to assume that whenever girls criticize other girls it's just because they're jealous or some bullshit like that. So let me just state for the record: I recognize that Ann Coulter is better looking than me (to some people), is a LOT smarter than me, is a better and cleverer writer than me, is braver and more confident than me, BLAH BLAH BLAH. I would never have the balls to do what she does and she would probably beat me in any debate because she knows her shit. But I'm still allowed to say she's too bitchy and is an attention whore.

I love it when two hot, intelligent and conservative women go at it.

Zarba [TypeKey Profile Page]:

The media use Coulter PRECISELY because she is an attention whore and makes an ass of conservatives. They want to be able to point at her and say, "THIS is the face of conservatism in America."

She says wild things because she knows it will get her on the news and sell books. She could care less about John Edwards. It's all about promoting Ann's celebrity.

The silly thing is that Edwards has ZERO chance of wining the nomination. It's not like Ann feels the need to knock off the frontrunner. It's like picking on Dennis Kucinich. It's easy, but what's the point?

keggin [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Rachel,

Give yourself some credit. My money says that you could put a pretty good smack down on the Coulter-beast.

dmacp [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Lets face it. Any money going to Edwards is money not going to some other candidate and cause, and that's a good thing, because this guy has less chance of getting elected than Shrillary, YomamaObama, and Goretron

_Jon [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Zarba +1

I, along side your boyfriend and ex-husband, am thankful you don't have balls. Not that what you're sporting below the belt matters to me personally, but well, it'd be kind of icky for a guy to be named Rachel and sporting a cute frilly dress in his banner.

As for Ann, I really think the world would be a much better place if she'd move to Cabo San Lucas and boink Pablo the Cabana boy all day. The only talent she has not caring that she's an idiot.

Its mainly liberals that have pushed her to the head of the Republican Party and for good reason. If they can get across that she's our voice anybody with even the slightest liberal mindset is going to steer well clear of anything to do with her.

A Recovering Liberal [TypeKey Profile Page]:

But I'm still allowed to say she's too bitchy and is an attention whore.

What she said.

P.S. Is "Dear Rachel" kaput?

pete in Midland [TypeKey Profile Page]:

OK, so I'm the only one who likes Ann. No problem.
I like her precisely because she doesn't feel the need to sugarcoat data.
Tell me exactly how many others have written books about the HUAC stuff from the 50's and spelled out how the liberal loonie left lied then and lies now about McCarthyism? Pretty much like her other books ... much may be well-known ... or vaguely known ... but the left and most/all other authors ignore the facts to be politically correct.
I'm as big a foe of political correctness as she is ... so I enjoy the attack dog tactics.

Of course, I might feel different if I had time to watch the TV programs you mention ... I just read her columns.

Gee who would've thought that a one night stand back in 1982 would have led to all this nonsense? What can I say except "Opps, sorry folks, my bad." It just goes to prove what I have always said for the past 25 years; "Delta Gamma girls are easy, and somewhat mentally unstable to boot."

Have fun ;)!

PS: You know now that I think about it, I haven't dated a blonde since those days. Go figure huh?

Fred Jameson [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Rachel, I kinda like Ann, but she can be a bit much. Other times, I also wonder why she has to be such a bitch.

In fairness, however, the "died in a terrorist attack" was snark directed at Matthews from his earlier musing about how much better off we'd be if VP Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack during his visit to Afghanistan.

I like Ann Coulter, too, and if she didn't exist, then the classier and more beautiful Michelle Malkin would be treated by the left as if she were Ann Coulter, and someone more milquetoast than Michelle would be lauded by people saying, "why can't X be the most popular conservative woman on TV rather than Ann Coulter."

Ann Coulter's not that bad. It's just that liberals like to froth at the mouth over her so much. And O how they like to call her a cunt. You don't know the meaning of the word misogyny until you've encountered a liberal screeching about Ann Coulter.

Then, of course, there are the tranny charges. Since they mainly come from people who seem to think being a tranny is a good thing, I don't quite get the vitriol.

She goes too far every now and then, but only a little. Take away the one sentence where she claimed the Jersey Girls "enjoy" their husbands’ deaths, and you still have a cogent chapter articulating the shameful way in which Democrats hide behind human shield victims in an effort to avoid substantive debates.

And I also think Ann's gotten a bad rap on the latest GMA flap. She wasn't wishing Edwards would die in a terrorist attack, she was just pointing out the double standards which allowed Bill Maher to wish for Cheney to die by a terrorist attack without anyone in the mainstream media being concerned.

Ann Coulter's contributions to debate have been important. Someone needed to counter the anti-McCarthy hysteria, and someone needed to respond to the evolution debate in a way that allows for the matter to be discussed without everyone who doesn't automatically kowtow to the secular line on things being dismissed out of hand as a toothless crank.

That doesn't mean McCarthy was a good guy, nor does it mean that evolution is wrong, but, good God, there is still room for discussion and debate on both matters, yet the left has browbeaten the culture on both for a long time. Ann Coulter is, at least, an antidote to that.

So, yeah, I think Ann Coulter is necessary.

Steve L. [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Coulter is in it for Coulter. There is no other explanation. She is constantly trying to draw attention to herself through her comments.

As far as I know, Coulter has never made a truly useful comment. Anyone who thinks that "she says what needs to be said" is a fool. Bombastic rhetoric like the kind she uses only serves to make her look foolish. While her point that she is treated unfairly by the media has a small amount of truth to it, her shouting of things more and more outrageous doesn't help. Sure, the media treats liberals' statements differently then those of conservatives. Calling John Edwards more (and worse)names doesn't slve that problem. It just makes her look petty, and by extension, it makes conservatives look petty.

Bad Penny [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Yeah, she's smart. Yeah, she knows her stuff. But she's her own worst enemy.

Saying mean things about how people deal with the deaths of the child (John Edwards) or husbands (the 911 widows) is over the line and give ammunition to the left.

Sometimes I think she and Michael Savage are mobys. (see the LGF FAQ http://www.littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/faq.php if you don't know what a moby is.)

J.C._Corbett [TypeKey Profile Page]:

That woman annoys me for a couple of reasons. First, and we've already established this, she's an attention whore who does more damage to the right than good. Dumbass(great sentence, eh?). Second, and I'm not kidding at all, she looks & acts so much like my ex wife (except for the black dress) that it gives me the willies.

I don't hate her with a passion or anything but when she comes on TV we do get a good laugh because she generally makes the liberal counterpoint person look like an idiot. But she's definitely too condescending.

I really like Malkin though.

So Rachel, I just had a thought cross my mind, and figured I would chime back in again real fast, as I am curious. If Ann Coulter and Michael Moore were to have a child together, what do you suppose that child would look like, and more importantly, what do you suppose the first words out of it's mouth would be? I don't have photoshop or I would have a go at it myself, I am curious nonetheless though. Would that child be the perfect libertarian, or something completely different? Thoughts anyone?

Have fun ;)!

sarahk [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Haha, I do agree with you about the primping in front of the camera. I was watching a clip on HotAir this morning with her on Hardball, and all she could do was flip her hair back and forth. THAT WAS DRIVING ME NUTS!

But what drove me even more nuts was that Elizabeth Edwards called in to the program to defend her husband's honor and ask Ann Coulter would she pretty please stop saying negative things about her poor widdle husband (he's so funny, he needs his WIFE do stand up to the mean stick woman for him), ok, EDWARDS CALLED IN TO TELL ANN COULTER SHE NEEDS TO STOP HURTING POOR JOHN'S FEELINGS, and now they're already using the phone call as a sympathy tool (look what big bad mean Ann Coulter did to me on Hardball) to raise money. Coulter didn't call Elizabeth. It's so ridiculous.

But yes, the sad thing is, the people that eat that crap up and will vote for Fluffy will completely not understand that Elizabeth was baiting Coulter. And the funds will roll in.

But don't worry, Rachel Lucas. Fluffy being the Dems' nominee is the best thing that could happen to the Republicans. So talk talk talk until the primaries, Ann. And then shut yer pie hole.

I understand that people don't like Coulter. She's not a nice person, nor does she pretend to be. And yes, she makes controversial statements to get attention.

But she got a bad rap this time. Here's what she said, in context:

"But about the same time, you know, Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack. So I've learned my lesson. If I'm gonna say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."

She was pointing out the disgusting double standard whereby Maher can say whatever he wants and get applause, whereas Ann is treated like the AntiChrist, as if everything she said were THE FACE OF CONSERVATISM, when anyone who reads conservative blogs knows that most top conservative bloggers are ambivalent towards her or outright don't like her.

Criminey. Coulter is a syndicated columnist. She's not the president of the RNC or Speaker of the House or anything like that. She just writes columns and books. Get over it already.

And for Mrs. Edwards to call in to a show named "Hardball" to chastise Ann for being such a meany is really rich. Hello? Politics is hardball, and if you can't stand the fast pitches, get out of the game.

Sticks and stones and all that. It drives me crazy how people overreact to some stupid remark made by some talking head, left or right, and then demand that the offender abase him/herself and grovel. Can't we grow up?

Oh, yeah!!!

Cat fight!

Girl on girl action!!!

I can supply the mud and jello and video camera.

Anyone have a big tarp and a hose?

My money's on R. Lucas.

"Take THAT, you skinny-pickle bleach-blonde sunken-cheeked no-hips constantly-flipping-your-stringy-hair skankster!"

"Ouch Eeeee!! Leggo my haaaaair!"

"Ha! Never! Fingers of steel, from all that typin'."

All right! Finally I say something that gets people snarking!

tolbert [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Hey Rachel, what's wrong with the comments page?

When I try to page back to the main the friggin comments page reloads like one of them damn porno sites and won't let me go, not that I know anything about porno sites, no-siree, don't know nothin bout that.

"If Ann Coulter and Michael Moore were to have a child together"

I don't understand the impulse to compare Coulter and Moore.

Moore is a serial liar, a chronically dishonest dissembler who misrepresents himself and fills his films with so much manipulative deceit that one cannot count on anything he presents as being truthful.

Ann Coulter, as far as I know, is at least honest, albeit unpopular.

Patrick [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Rachel is better looking, clevererererer, and could snap Coulter's arm and disembowel her with the sharpened end of her humerus.

So I agree with everything everyone said.

I'm with Kensington on this one. Coulter takes the words out of my mouth sometimes. So she knows she's good at what she does, big deal. I'm rather a fan of Ayn Rand's point of view -- its not bragging if its true.

But really, when I hear about something she said and I start to cluck my tongue at her, I usually find out in fifteen seconds of research that she didn't say what the liberals said she said.

PS I don't find her very attractive at all.

Phelps [TypeKey Profile Page]:

You just need to set the rules on the fight. Everytime someone rolls thier eyes, they have to take a tequila shot. I think you could win that marathon.

retrocop [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Rachel,

The only thing I like about Coulter is that she is conservative. She is not uattractive, but really doesn't do anything for me, and she makes me cringe with some of the things she says.I know that she is actually quite intelligent, but I wish she would use some of that intelligence before she speaks.

Given a choice of actually meeting someone face to face and having a conversation with them, I would definitely prefer your company. I don't do "bitchy" for very long before losing my patience (Unless its accompanied by a little humor and self deprecation).

"My money's on R. Lucas."

So is mine, because Rachel has guns and a dog that even pit bulls are afraid of. Ann Coulter doesn't stand a chance.

Ooh, I just realized that my first paragraph above was incorrectly written; it should have read as follows:

"I like Ann Coulter, too, and if she didn't exist, then the classier and more beautiful Michelle Malkin would be treated by the left as if she were Ann Coulter, and someone more milquetoast than Michelle would be lauded by people saying, "why can't X be the most popular conservative woman on TV rather than Michelle Malkin.""

There's no point in trying to find an conservative spokeswoman who will be considered acceptable by the left. However classy she might be, the left will simply lower the bar on what it takes for them to scream that she's awful.

Also, just because something might make someone cringe doesn't mean it shouldn't be said.

Retrocop,

I have a friend that is like Coulter. My roommate enjoyed my description of her:

"Laura is bitchy the way some people have red hair. You can't really hold it against her."

I think the same goes for ann.

Ann Coulter....The world's first conservative transvestite.

Yes, I hate her. With a Passion. why? I'll tell you why, Rachel, put on your fire suit hun, because it's about to get U G L Y IN HERE!

1. Because ANYONE, I don't give a flying fuck who it is, that makes insulting remarks about someone's child that was killed in a accident is beyond what I consider a decent human being.

2. Because anyone who prints the fucking LIES and DISTORTIONS OF THE TRUTH THAT SHE DOES IS A FUCKING ASSHOLE, A BITCH, A CUNT AND EVERY OTHER FUCKING WORD YOU CAN THINK OF!

3. Because she's a LIAR as to what kind of Conservative she truly is, she claims to be some CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIAN, and it's a FUKCING LIE! She told in one of her books, where she goes to Church, and it was investigated by people, and the Church name she gave, the PASTOR of the Church said SHE'D NEVER EVEN BEEN THERE! So, that makes HER A FUCKING LIAR! Not only this, I've known Christians all my life, I grew up in CHurch, basically, and I like to Believe that I am Saved by the Grace of my Lord Jesus Christ, okay? Even though, I swear like I do. But anyhow, NONE OF THE CHRISTIAN PEOPLE I KNOW, EVER DRESSED OR EVEN ACTED LIKE HER! SHE DRESSES LIKE A FUCKING WHORE AND A SLUT!!!! SHE IS AN EMBERASSMENT TO THE CHRISTIAN WORLD! What I'm getting at here is she's a SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE, and that's ALL SHE IS!

4. Not only this, SHE'S A FUCKING FELON! Yes! That's right folks, She's being or was being investigated for VOTER FRAUD IN FLORIDA! until her fucking FBI AGENT EX-BOYFRIEND FORCED THE LOCAL POLICE TO STOP INVESTIGATING THE CHARGES! I have to truly wonder, how many sexual favors did she perform on this guy and his freinds to get out of those Charges?????!?!??! And by the way, her case is STILL being investigated by Officals in Florida.

Can you tell that I HATE Ann Coulter?

AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHH!

DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE!

:-/

-Me

I've read one of Coulter's books some years ago and I did find myself delighting in how she smashed down so many lies the Left spews at every fricken college party they attend and now on the internets....but over the years, she has gotten to be a bit much. It was...maybe a couple of months ago I saw her on Fox and she irritated the crap out of me so much, I had to turn the t.v. off. She was just so rude.

I've also read your site for a few years and you have made me laugh with delight in the way that you smash down lies the Left makes, (or did when you blogged that kind of stuff).

The difference: You are far, FAR more entertaining than Ann Coulter, you aren't a bat shit bitch, (at least not on your site), and you show your human side while I've never seen Coulter act remotely decent.

So, I'd say, maybe Coulter knows more than we do but I'd rather read your words than hers. So my money goes to you as well.

(And I promise I'm not sucking up after siding with SarahK on the whole "whose dog is cuter" issue...I mean it.)

capitano [TypeKey Profile Page]:

This can only be settled with a "shower fight scene" ala Undercover Brother, featuring the White She-Devil, with popcorn, Big Gulps, and recliner chairs for the spectators.

sarahk [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Serenity, she knows there's no need to suck up, because she's gonna have to face facts about Rowdi soon enough. Rowdi just is cuter.

Technomad [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Myself, I liked her first few books. The one about Blowjob Bubba was great, and the next couple weren't bad at-all...a little OTT sometimes, but I could live with that.

When she decided to go off after evolution, though, she lost me completely. Why the HELL do conservatives insist on continuing this stupid, stupid fight? I know a lot of people who'd be conservatives, except that every time they go near a Republican rally, it's more like a church service, with people chattering about their personal relationship with Jesus.

In her last book, Coulter wrote like her cheese had definitely slipped off her cracker.

her cheese slipped the crack long before that, lemmie tell ya!

Her problem is she's narcissistic.

I mean, I'm all into being into the self love thing, but dang... when peoples is puking cause of your love, something wrong there buddy!

read more on Coulter's issue!

retrocop [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Hardliner,

Chill man. You are in a state of mind that usually would cause me to start considering force options if I were dealing with you on the street. YOU are EXACTLY what you are criticizing Coulter for being. I don't particularly care for her as you might have taken from my previous comment, but your comment looks like something from "DAILY KOS".

I watched a little bit of "Glenn Beck" last night, and he had a short piece with Coulter. A lot of what she says is taken totally out of contex by the media which changes the entire meaning of what she is saying. I'm sure this is done intentionally. Coulter knows this and could be more careful in HOW she says things so that her words wouldn't be so easy to misconstrue, but chooses not to.

As to the accusation you made about the voter fraud thing, she is NOT a felon. She has not been convicted of anything. Your reference was to an INVESTIGATION. As one who makes a living doing investigations, I can assure you that allegations do not necessarily mean that something actually happened. Someone could ALLEGE that you are a child molester. You might be investigated for that allegation and then upon finding nothing it would be dropped. The dropping of an investigation after nothing is found to prove an allegation is not true seldom gets the attention the original allegation did.

retrocop [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Oops sorry about that double negative in that last sentence. It should have said: The dropping of an investigation after nothing is found to prove an allegation true seldom gets the attention that the original allegation did.

Hardliner, lie down and breath deeply for a while and maybe it will pass.

Tanya [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Why does she have to be such a bitch?

To sell books. She's found her niche, and she's milking it. She could care less that she's a liability to us, because she's rich.

And like the rest of the mostly-talentless attention-whores, if we ignore her, she'll eventually disappear.

What you see with Coulter is essentially a true example of speaking truth to power. You have to admire someone who is frank and forthcoming with their opinions, no matter what your opinion is of their personal ethos.

I would ten times have an allegedly narcissistic person whom I can trust to say whats on their mind than an apparently humble person that says whatever gets them ahead at that point in time.

At any rate, I don't see why it works any of y'all up so much -- if you hate her so much, just don't watch her on TV. Works for me.

Yeah and hardliner, I've never in my life met a Christian that spews such bile-tinged vitriol like you just did. I'd rather have a gal who dresses well than someone like you in the "Christian World".

Tanya [TypeKey Profile Page]:

You have no idea if what Coulter's saying is what she truly believes. She's exactly like Howard Stern, and just as genuine.

pete in Midland [TypeKey Profile Page]:

quite a few people comments on how Coulter makes conservatives look bad.
As apposed to what or who?
Do we have any speakers for the right that are respected on the left?
Whenever the MSM swoons over a "conservative", it's usually one that most sane people call RINO's ... certainly never a recognized conservative.
Certainly Ann says things that horrify some folks ... but that doesn't make them false. I happen to agree with her about the spiteful witches from New Jersey. She could never say anything about the Adulterer-in-chief that could be far from the mark.
Basically, anyone that hated by the nutroots can't be all that bad ... since it's truth they hate most of all. And as far as the snark .. gimmee a break! Others may debate with nutroots and assorted MSM flakes by taking a pillow to a gun fight ... she doesn't. I don't choose to accept that she speaks for me, ore anyone except herself ... y'know, one of those conservative ideals? Actually, the only thing I can think of that I don't like about her (aren't we the group that doesn't care about looks 'n stuff?) ... is the fact she's a lawyer. A very good one, apparently.

Michelle Malkin could clean the floor with Coulter in any contest from beauty to brains to basic class, why isn't SHE the most popular conservative woman on TV?

Because, in the words of her liberal critics, she is a yellow whore.

Technomad [TypeKey Profile Page]:

As far as the 9-11 widows go...it's far from uncommon to find widows (or other bereaved folks) who are rather obviously enjoying all the attention and comforting they're getting. In extreme cases, this sort of thing can lead to someone like Marybeth Tinning...who, IIRC, killed a whole long line of her own children because she'd gotten hooked on the sympathy and suchlike she got as a bereaved mother.

It may not always be conscious, but it's often there.
