The guy is smart. Here he talks about "green conservatism" and Allahpundit sort of explains it.
I love Allahpundit, by the way. I don't know if I've just missed it, but that post is the first time I've read the phrase "the Chimperor", and I can't stop laughing.

I too love Newt, but he's not electable. I would hope that he finds himself in an important cabinet post in President Thompson's administration (Yeah Fred, get off your ass and announce already!)
And I would *love* to see John Bolton as our Secretary of State.
And maybe somebody competent over at the Justice Department.
And I'd like to see somebody with a lick of common sense running the Dept of Transportation.
Ok, enough politico-fantasizing for a Friday night. No wonder I'm not getting laid this weekend...

I found Newt rather arrogant when he was in power and in office. Granted, at that time I mostly only knew what I saw on the evening news or read the weekly newsmagazines. I'm quite willing to cede the point that under those conditions I only would have seen the worst of his quotes.
But I've seen him pop up here and there since in more of an analyst role, and he's quite capable of dispassionately presenting both sides of an issue fairly, if he wants to. That said, I think I'd prefer he didn't try getting back into politics, it's probably not worth the risk of him letting the power go to his head again.
I prefer him as the professor you wish you might have had in a history course than, well, the professors I did have.

I don't like Newt because of his many and manifest character flaws. I would rather see him offer his services as a strategist to the nominated candidate than try to drive the debate from the sidelines. Environmentalism will never be a conservative issue unless you want to argue about the cost of hunting licenses. There's no coming to agreement on this issue with the Left because the environmentalist agenda is dominated by the kook fringe. Forget it. Global Warming lacks substance based in reality. It will die a natural death when its emotional appeal finally gives way to boredom. Expect then a new manufactured crisis from the Left.

Newt does put forth some interesting ideas from time to time. However, the problem with Newt is he's all about political expediency.
He would sell out his grandmother if it would give him a slight temporary advantage.
He might be best used as a unofficial policy advisor but there is no role for him at the cabinet level.

He'd never win. People like my mother are all emotion but even she likes Rudy and somewhat McCain. But Newt she hates because of his affair and attitude. She is not politically active and the GOP needs someone like Rudy who non-conservative, non-politically active people like.

I like Newt as well, and I have always believed he was under appreciated, and overly criticized. Having said that though, I would rather see him in a cabinet position, or as an advisor rather than at the forefront of the party again. He is too apt to draw fire than praise, and what the party needs now is someone more apt to be liked by both conservatives and non-conservatives alike, then a rabblerouser.
Have fun ;)!

Plus Giuliani was in Anger Management and Newt wasn't...so he loses automatically.

"Global Warming lacks substance based in reality. It will die a natural death when its emotional appeal finally gives way to boredom. Expect then a new manufactured crisis from the Left."
I predict it will take the form of a new global cooling catastrophe that emerges in 2015 or so guaranteed to KILL US ALL!1!1 unless we let Democrats raise our taxes pronto.

The winning ticket is Fred Thompson and Condi Rice. Giuliani should be UN Ambassador and Newt Sec State.

Conservationism has several aspects that could make it a good conservative cause.
-Reducing dependence on foreign oil means our foreign policy becomes more straightforward and we don't have to play nearly as much ball with scumbag regimes.
-Hunting is a traditionally conservative activity, and hunters were (and to a surprising extent still are) a powerful bastion of conservationism. No open, well-cared-for land means no hunt, and those who stay in the cities rarely appreciate the land in any way but the abstract.
-Food production and preparation (and concern for where food comes from) is a traditionally family-centered activity.
"Environmentalism" as it is politically practiced these days rarely has anything to do with what's truly good for the environment anyway. But I agree with Mark- for reasons of history and human nature, conservation isn't likely to become a conservative cause any time soon.
It's in my fantasy file next to Republicans pushing for legalizing gay marriage on family-values grounds.
