Sheesh. I've just read the 10th article in two days with the general thesis that the reason the Michael Vick story is so huge is because people love dogs so much. Yes, people do love dogs. And yes, plenty of other professional athletes have committed crimes and weren't excoriated quite so enthusiastically, but the presumption that the only difference is that dogs were involved is pure poppycock.
The difference is that torture and killing were involved.
Does anyone really believe that if instead of pit bulls, Vick had tortured and killed horses, monkeys, kittens, pigs, or any other animal, people wouldn't be just as turned off? Personally, it doesn't matter to me even a little what species is involved - if he'd been charged with the same crimes against goats, I would be just as revolted and angry about it. It's sick. Pretty simple.
And the comparison of Vick's crimes to all the DUI's, drug arrests, doping, gambling, et cetera committed by various NFL players in the past is such fantastic bullshit. It's NOT the same, and Vick should not be treated the same as those guys and given the same forgiveness. He abused living creatures and then killed them, and he admits to it; there is no doubt of his guilt at this point. I don't get why that's so hard for people to wrap their brains around.

Well, technically, he doesn't actually admit to torturing and killing dogs. Just like OJ technically wasn't convicted of murder.
But we all know they both actually did what they're accused of. And you're right, it's the torture and killing that's so repulsive about Vick's crimes, not the gambling or other hoo-haw.

It's mind boggling to me that there are those who try to compare Vick's activities with the run-of-the-mill offenses that other NFL players have indulged in. Vick's crimes are against defenseless creatures. I don't care how strong and dangerous pit bulls may be--they were in the care and control of thugs who knew what they were handling.
I can only hope that one of these dogs managed to lay a little church-deacon scrotal action on one of Vick's compadres.

I don't think animals have rights.
I believe PEOPLE have responsibilities. Vick failed miserably on this account. Like giving a loaded gun to a 3 year old.
I don't know where this thinking comes from. Still, I've seen the videos of Korean's torturing dogs to death, so the meat is especially sweet and promotes virility in the person consuming it. Where is the outrage there?
BTW Rachel, I used to read your blog religiously a few years ago, and was delighted to see a link from Bill Whittle again. Thanks for joining back in the good fight.

tlar...I've never heard such a thing about Koreans but I would be equally disgusted and outraged. Truly torturing an animal is just sick. (I don't consider general slaughter of animals for food to be torture though.)
Vick is a dirtbag moron who deserves the same treatment he gave to his dogs.

You're lucky you don't live in Atlanta. It's all Vick all the time. There's usually three articles a day about him in the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation. Of course the local NAACP honcho says we should forgive him and dogfighting is no different than hunting.

I'm not sure which is worse:
Vick (and any others) torturing and killing and enjoying it...
vs.
Third-trimester abortionists torturing and killing with no feelings at all.
http://www.ldi.org/DeathCamps/Methods3.cfm
You could say that Vick is a sick asshole. That his problem is an individual one.
But what do you say of the doctors and nurses and all of their support staff? They are a whole machine of death that operates under the aegis of a legal decision that is allegedly supported by the U.S. Constitution and that is desired by millions of persons who see themselves as being beyond good and evil. Nothing of moral relevance about it as far as they are concerned.
Vick destroys his own soul.
Abortion helps destroy the soul of the culture by making desire equivalent to right.
What would happen if women who had third term abortions were shown the results?
Would it be prohibited?
If so, why?
It's only meat.

Interesting, I had no idea what all the hubbub was about regarding this Vick clown, until literally just now. In all sincerity, every time I came across this story (which was a lot) it was on some sports related page, so I just breezed over it guessing some overpaid jock did something incredibly stupid yet again.
You know what I mean; like taking drugs, not paying their income tax "ever", beating up a fan, DWI involvement, Porn video, sleeping with an underage woman (you know the routine stuff). As such I simply chose to ignore the story figuring it was just the same old same old. Dog torturing you say? Hmm, that's certainly a new one to add to the list, and sports fans go ga-ga over these trained circus geeks why exactly?

I'm curious to hear Rick Lucas's thoughts on this. ;)
And I'm just going to ignore Lance DB's using this as a reason to post anti-choice propaganda. Ok, maybe I'm not. "Torture"? Seriously? And why would the doctors and staff be at fault, and not the woman who chooses the abortion? What do you suggest the punishment be for those women?
Off my soapbox. The above paragraph should be taken as rhetorical. Sorry folks.

Damn straight. People aren't so interested in this because it is dogfighting (well some people may be, but they probably think they can hear the screams of the dairy cows in their milk)-- they're interested because people love a a train wreck. And this whole deal is a $130 million train wreck.
That's why I try to avoid storied about Vick, Hilton, Lohan, etc.. I don't care to rubberneck on the highway and fail to see why I should do so on the net.
