Awwwwwww.

While I do battle with my Wordpress installation, you should read this. It's sweet.

A male chow mix laid down in the middle of a busy street this morning to keep watch over its companion, a female German shepherd mix, after it was hit and killed by a car on Chambers Road near East 52nd Avenue.

The dogs lacked any identifying tags and had been reported running loose together for the past two days, according to Denver Animal Care & Control director Doug Kelley.

"When a companion animal is hit, they'll stand vigil. It's sad," Kelley said of the dog. "It's kind of uncommon to see it in the middle of the road."

He speculated the two dogs, neither of which had been spayed, had been involved in a "romance."

Denver police officers were called to the scene just after 6:30 a.m. to help direct traffic until animal control officials could respond to the situation, according to a police department spokesman.

Patrolman Bill Tyler said two "good Samaritans" helped out at the scene. One driver blocked the lane with a car and turned on the vehicle's flashing lights after a couple of cars narrowly missed hitting the chow and its lost love.

Another person was able to get the surviving dog onto the median between the north and southbound lanes of Chambers, Tyler said.

"The chow didn't want me to get anywhere close to the dead dog," said Tyler. "I guess you could say (the dog was upset)."

I wonder if Sunny and Digger would be that way for each other. Every day I worry about how Sunny will react when Digger dies and it makes me tear up so let's stop talking about it. Here's another pic of when Sunny was a puppy and making Digger's life pure hell. He tried to eat her head back then, when it was small enough, but she survived, much to his chagrin. Now he loves her and humps her daily.

I love that photo! :) I know that my dogs mourned for their cousin dog who they didn't even live with!!! He died in May and when we went to visit the house they wandered around all sad and mopey looking for him. And I know that when our baby girl goes (she's getting old) Trooper will seriously be sad. He loves his brother but bonded immediately with his sister. I hate thinking about it. :(

In late 1999 (Christmas Eve, in fact), two dogs came to our front door. They were obviously very fond of one another. Later, our mailman said that he had seen them working their way up our hill all day long; that he thought someone had dumped them at a nearby park and they were just wandering. But they stuck together and were sitting side by side when we opened the door in response to a phone call from our neighbor asking if two of our dogs had gotten out.

They had no collars and no one responded to our advertisements and posters, so we decided to keep them so that they could stay together. Heck, they were only #8 and #9 in the pack at the time.

Anyway, I'm coming to the point here, so hold your horses. Which is that the male died a little more than 2 years later after a bout with cancer (and yes, we still miss him terribly). We were very worried about the female, given that she was so attached to him, bathed him daily, and stayed at his side no matter which room he chose to be in. But she did fine, and is still with us today (although she is quite elderly, but the accupuncture and chiropractic therapies are doing wonders for her; I quite recommend them as an addition to normal veterinary treatments).

One additional point. From 2002 to just recently, she did not show any particular affection for any of our other dogs. But then we got Buster, who has a giant head just like Buddy her original partner. When she is awake, she now lavishes the same sort of attention on Buster that she originally did on Buddy. Make of that what you will.

My therapist from my teen years had two Alaskan Malamutes (like you, CastoCreations)and they were truly each other's mate. Those two would sit out together on her front lawn in suburban Chicago, enjoying the sunshine and each others company. Both elderly, one passed before the other, and it was clear the surviving dog was in mourning. She would watch for her mate on the counch the family had placed in front of their large picture window. I always thought her mourning was more like a vigil, a dignified waiting for her mate's return. The fidelity of animals, particularly dogs, is in amazing and humbling thing to witness.

If we human beings have souls, then animals do, too. They are, many times, far more "human" than we are.

I agree langtry. My hubby says he hates people. He's a dog person. lol Dogs don't lie to him or call him names on a daily basis.

I know that when our older girl dies that our little boy Malamute is going to be very sad. He adores her!

That's quite a story. I think I mentioned Where The Red Fern Grows the other day. This story reminded me of that. Strange that I would bring up that particular book a day or so before a story like this comes up. And no, I don't think I'm psychic.

However, I have two questions:

1) Did I understand langtry to say that CastoCreations is an Alaskan Malamute? and,

2) Rachel, what were you doing with a land mine in your yard when that picture was taken?

Did I understand langtry to say that CastoCreations is an Alaskan Malamute?
You are out of your ever-loving mind! Of course Casto isn't a Malamute, but she is Mom three dogs, two of whom are Malamutes.
