I've gotten a few emails since I started blogging again, asking me if I still have guns. Silly question. I just don't write much about them because they're not nearly as exciting as my dogs. The guns pretty much lay inside drawers 24 hours a day and don't eat treats, poop, or hump each other. Booooorring. Anyway I saw this article by a British writer at Hot Air and it is interesting. Read it.
Despite the recent spate of shootings on our streets, we pride ourselves on our strict gun laws. Every time an American gunman goes on a killing spree, we shake our heads in righteous disbelief at our poor benighted colonial cousins. Why is it, even after the Virginia Tech massacre, that Americans still resist calls for more gun controls? The short answer is that “gun controls” do not work: they are indeed generally perverse in their effects. Virginia Tech, where 32 students were shot in April, had a strict gun ban policy and only last year successfully resisted a legal challenge that would have allowed the carrying of licensed defensive weapons on campus. It is with a measure of bitter irony that we recall Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University of Virginia, recording the words of Cesare Beccaria: “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
He talks about the Brits' rotten attitude about us and why that attitude is fuckin' stupid:
In Britain, however, the image of violent America remains unassailably entrenched. Never mind the findings of the International Crime Victims Survey (published by the Home Office in 2003), indicating that we now suffer three times the level of violent crime committed in the United States; never mind the doubling of handgun crime in Britain over the past decade, since we banned pistols outright and confiscated all the legal ones.
BOO-YAH, suckers! Get with the program.

My grandfather was a Brit, and he was definitely not a wimp. Whatever happened to these poor benighted wankers?

Actually, as a hippie, I know full well that making something illegal does not make it unavailable.

Well said. Now if only British politicians (of either party) would get a clue.

Yep, and I had a sudden flash of insight about ten years ago that changed my mind about the "War on Guns".

Here's how it is down south.
I was minding my own bidness cruising along at 2 AM last Saturday. No one on the highway except deer waiting to run out at me.
A sheriff's car pulls me over.
The Deputy gets out.
He says, "Howdy. Where you going?"
"Nowhere, special, Officer. Just cruising. Hard day with the mob at home."
"Have you had anything to drink tonight, Sir?"
"No, Sir. Never when I ride."
"How come you're holding onto the handle bars?"
"Because I have a loaded .357 magnum in the right saddle bag." [You're supposed to hold onto the steering wheel if a cop pulls you over and you have a firearm handy.]
"Do you have a concealed carry permit."
"Sure do, Officer."
"Okay. Well, have a nice ride."
"Thanks."
We're Jacksonians.

If people are less than enthused about your gunblogging, perhaps you should try dressing up the firearms like you do the dogs. You never know what's gonna work...

LDB, it's much like that in Arizona also. I was pulled over a few months ago (license plate light was out, he said). I handed him my drivers license *and* my CCW permit, told him I was carrying at the time. He asked me a few questions (where I'm going, where I came from, etc), but didn't seem terribly interested in me after that. Never bothered writing up a "fix-it" ticket. Obviously I didn't fit the profile of who/what he was looking for.
