Some years back I watched three girls walk past the club pool, all under four, The first with Easter hat and dress, the others more casual. And I think of these girls, that I only caught a glimpse of, when someone mentions how beautiful little children are. And how the faith of little children is special and admirable.
But the point is, that under four years old, the children typically only ever hear a single story, the values and beliefs of their parents. So much of the “innocence” of little children is the fact that they have been sheltered from competing stories, from instruction on tolerating differences, from experience adapting to changes outside their home “story.
The lady who was mother to the two Chechen dudes that mucked up Boston is just that “innocent”. Her religion, her father, her husband, and her society all strive, mightily, to isolate and “shelter” their young, their women, their faithful, from “harmful” (rational, contrary, or tolerant) contacts, experiences, and thoughts.
She isn’t ranting from the basis of a liberal education; she is expressing a faith held, childlike, in complete and utter absence of any suspicion that anything she has ever been told was wrong, deceitful, or manipulative for the gain of others. She has no moral compass; no one ever suggested such a thing is necessary, or that she would be allowed to use one.
She does make one point quite clear, though I suspect it was completely inadvertent on her part. She taught her sons absolutely no respect for the lives and well being of “others”.
