My dogs are sweet and also I have a Facebook page now for the blog

Primo was already in bed last night and I went to belly-scratch him one last time, when Firefly came climbing up all over everything, including Primo’s face. He grunted at her once and then put his head back down in defeat while she flung herself back there and settled in for a snuggle. Primo isn’t snuggly or cuddly but he’s definitely stoic, and generous with his bed.

…………

If you’re on Facebook, I’ve just created a this morning because I take a stupid amount of pics and have a stupid amount of shallow thoughts that aren’t worth actual blog posts and it’s crazy-easier to toss that stuff up there than here. I’m still trying to blog more because it’s fun and because most of the people who still read this blog, I consider friends so I don’t want to lose contact with you, and I know you don’t all have Facebook accounts. Again I write a sentence that I’m not sure makes sense to anyone but me. Derrr?

Anyway, if you want to come see me there, .

I’m not asking anyone to “Like” my page or “Follow” it or anything; I don’t care about numbers, I just want to have the community and the conversation, and it is vastly more easy to do that in the Facebook framework than it is with a blog, in my opinion. Over the last several years, I’ve reconnected with old friends and made new ones through FB that I never, ever could have found otherwise, and I’d like to get to know some of you better but it’s just really difficult with the blog. It’s harder to reply to comments here than there, for example. It’s harder to access my blog with my iPhone and iPad, even with the best apps, than it is to access Facebook. Etc, etc. The point is, the page is there if you’re interested. You can just bookmark it instead of “liking” or “following”.

And there will be a lot more dog pics there. I’ve just started the page today so there’s only one pic so far, of Firefly, but I have SO MANY IT IS STUPID.

And, I’ll probably post more about politics there for some reason, I don’t know, it just feels like less pressure to make FB comments than to construct entire blog posts about politics.

  1. I was a much more consistent blogger before I became a victim of Facebook. I blame racism and the internets.

    And magnets. Totally, magnets.

    Anyway, cute dogs are cute.

Hi Rachel, well if you don’t mind, I’d rather come here. I had a facebook account up until Oct 2012, and I made some political comments there, and the facebook staff altered them in subtle ways to deflect their meaning. They were clearly taking sides in the election…the other side. So I quit. I gather that some of my “friends” there unfriended me until after 90 days when I disappeared from facebook altogether. (When you quit facebook, evidently, they give you 90 days to change your mind. I never had any intention of changing my mind.) One thing that quitting facebook did for me is reinvigorate my own website. I now have some followers on my own site, not that I’ve done much to encourage that. Anyway, good luck and I hope your experience there is better than mine.

@Richard: I’ve been on Facebook for years (with my personal account) and have never had any problems except the way it steals ALL MY TIME. Heh. But anyway, I’m not moving over there entirely – it’s just going to be where I put all the pics and dumb thoughts that I don’t want to bother putting here because it’s not worth the hassle of dealing with the WordPress interface. For example, to post a picture on my blog requires half a dozen mouse clicks; on FB it takes maybe two. This might sound lazy but I have a really fucked up right elbow and hand, and the less I use a mouse, the better. :)

  4. I was a much more consistent blogger until my job decided to block access to my blogging site. Something about it being, and I quote, “non-work related”. ::sad trombone music::

It was always easy for me to bang out a post during lunch at work. Easier than, say, trying to create a post at home with 3 children running around. I even added Scribefire to Firefox, but my IT department figured out how to block that, too. Now, I find much less time to do so, relegating my wit and wisdom ::cough:: mostly to Twitter, with occasional forays onto FB.

As much as I enjoy the insightful political discussions here, I find that I need a respite from such things so that I can remain-more or less- sane. And happy. So I definitely dig the dog pictures and such and will check them out on a regular basis.

I’ll also be hanging here; never got into fads like myspace or facebook, but more power to you. Save us some good pics too, please!

  6. I think of Facebook as a completely schizophrenic community. On the one hand, a post could attract the most agreeable echo chamber ever. On the other, the blistering attacks of derision are stunning.

I do notice though that the writers who used to come up with those milquetoast anecdotes that filled the Reader’s Digest pages after the text of an article had gone as far as it could go but yet did not reach the bottom of the last page have now found employment writing those please re-post stories about old married couples and cats that take 7 years to walk across country to find their original families.

That was one sentence up there. I’d never make it at Reader’s Digest.

  7. See you on Facebook. :) I have to agree with you about a blog being more of a chore these days; sometimes (today and yesterday being perfect examples) I wonder why I even bother trying to keep the blog going with daily posts; it’s much easier to connect with the friends circle I’ve made on FB.

I don’t do facebook. I do do (heh) twitter. And the blog, obviously. I think you can put a FB widget on the blog to show your latest stuff here automatically.

  9. I do find FB is easier for the quick – hey what about this thought, and blogging is for when I get more long winded. So your post makes sense to me.

  10. Richard

@Rachel Lucas: Oh, now I know why you haven’t been posting very often. Hope you get better (give it heat and rest and don’t let any surgeons mess with it.) I’ll still check by here. All the best.

I am not on FB anymore, and today I fiddled with the cookies, etc. in Chrome to block FB. So, I can still see Rachl Lukis’ doggehs (as long as she keeps them public *shakes fist*) without collecting FB tracking cookies! Yay!

Have followed you for years, mostly lurk. I closed down my Facebook account because of security concerns and have never looked back. Just not my cup of tea. Understand the ease of using Facebook vs. your blog, but hope you continue to post here. Will miss you if you eventually close down.

  13. @Phelps: Sadly, my blog is on Movable Type, courtesy of Pixy Misa. I know that it’s possible to create delayed future posts, but it requires some intervention on his part. Sadly, he’s pretty busy managing a gazillion blogs. Ah well.

@Rachel Lucas: You could always delve into the dark inner recesses of the control panel and set up Oxwall. Then you’d have your own Facebook-like site for the people who don’t want to do Facebook.

Very cool to see you on Facebook! Love love all the dog pics. I’ve been on FB for about 4 years. Fun to connect with old friends and keep up with family but I pretty much use my account to show off my 8 dogs and occasional foster dog. Also built up a really nice dog rescue/shelter network over several states. And of course I occasionally post random crap. I try to stay away from politics because I have dog network friends on both sides of the aisle and I’d rather save a dog than argue with someone who doesn’t and will never understand why I believe the way that I do. I’ll make a random flyby political comment, but most of the time I just share pics of my dogs :-)

I think you should share recipes too. I remember one recipe you shared from your old site – something like a chicken/spinach/alfredo dish. I still make it from time to time and always double the sauce. Looking forward to visiting your page!

@Tazio: Thank you for that! I didn’t even know about it.

@maya: Yay! I do plan to keep that whole page public for that very reason. I have a private page for mah private stuff.

@Bob in VA: I definitely will not close the blog down, ever! This format is great for longer posts and stories about the dogs, etc. I just need somewhere for all the excess pics and random dumb thoughts :)

@RG: What is this Oxwall of which you speak? I shall Google. Sounds intriguing…

@Nex: Definitely will do food stuff!! That’s one thing I like to talk about on FB but don’t really love to blog about because there are soooo many food blogs already.

@Rachel Lucas: It’s an open source social network thing similar to Facebook. Here’s the and there’s a . You can use the Softaculous installer in the Control Panel to set it up. (I assume it’s available on all the different Host Matters servers.)

  18. from blogging to facebook to twitter ta da! I get the first two but that twitter thing??? I’m to old and too wordy. Love Love lOVE the dogs and so happy for you that you are back home. It’s great to tour the world and all but we know what Dorothy said and she was right.

  19. Pam Maltzman

Well, Rachel, glad you made it back to the States with your husband and dog Primo (now 2 dogs). Hope you are able to get your fill of nachos and other Mexican goodies.
