I love a good backlash.
What was it that Rev. Wright said about chickens coming home to roost? I wonder how Barack Obama feels about all the chickens showing up at his door right now, roosting their asses off, because his “mentor”/pastor categorically refuses to shut his cakehole. What has it been, three speeches in three days now?
The funny thing is, Wright’s public statements in the last few days have not only utterly failed to mitigate the original problem, which was the fallout from a few soundbites, they’ve compounded it a hundredfold, because now he’s really starting to piss people off. Even those who had no problem with him until a few days ago.
If he had just let Obama distance himself and change the subject, Obama might still have a chance. People might still be blissfully ignorant of a man named James Cone and unaware that Obama’s mentor/pastor has said, “I do not in any way disagree with James Cone.” Kathy Shaidle explains:
The leading theorist of Black Liberation Theology is James Cone. Overtly racist, Cone’s writings posit a black Jesus who leads African-Americans as the “chosen people.” In Cone’s cosmology, whites are “the devil,” and “all white men are responsible for white oppression.” Cone makes this point without ambiguity: “This country was founded for whites and everything that has happened in it has emerged from the white perspective,” Cone has written. “What we need is the destruction of whiteness, which is the source of human misery in the world.”
If whiteness stands for all that is evil, blackness symbolizes all that is good. “Black theology,” says Cone, “refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.”
I know some Obama supporters will insist that this is not how Obama feels, but that excuse is about as solid as diarrhea. Because they know, we know, and everyone who isn’t functionally retarded knows that it is perfectly fair to judge someone by the company they keep. Obama has repeatedly called Wright his mentor, and he sat in Wright’s church for over 20 years. Wright does “not disagree in any way” with explicitly hateful, racist ideology. It is what it is. Time to deal with it. ***
Malkin has several videos from the question-and-answer part of Wright’s National Press Club appearance yesterday. The guy is such a narcissist showboatin’ fool that it’s almost funny. He says things like,
Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He did not put me in chains. He did not put me in slavery. And he didn’t make me this color.
That’s the kind of statement that is nearly impossible to deconstruct because it’s so fantastically stupid on so many levels. On the one hand, he’s specifically saying that whoever his enemy is, it’s the entity who put him in chains and slavery and made him black. But he’s never been in chains or slavery, so who is his enemy? On another hand, no human made him black, so isn’t God or nature his enemy for doing that to him?
He also says that God will continue to damn America…
until racism and slavery are confessed and asked for forgiveness
Huh. So I guess God has damned Africa for the same reason. I’m pretty sure the multitude of African tribes who sold other Africans into slavery haven’t apologized, either. They’re still doing it, actually, but you never hear about that. All guys like Wright care about is what didn’t happen to them at the hands of people who are no longer alive. You know, sometimes I wonder what hut-dwelling, persecuted, starving, or enslaved Africans - who are alive and dying right this second - would think about American blacks like Wright and Cone, if they could know about them. Which they can’t because they live in abject poverty and terror and don’t have a lot of spare time to surf the internet, seeing as how they’re so busy running from machete slaughters and waiting for their cup of rice each day, that is if it isn’t hijacked by other Africans with guns.
I wonder how “supported” they would feel in their “blackness” to know that wealthy, intelligent, resourceful black Americans spend so much time and effort pounding away on shit that happened here hundreds of years ago instead of directing all that rage at injustice towards Africa itself. You know, maybe actually helping black people who need it about a million times more than your average Detroit gangbanger. Just a thought I have sometimes.
I especially love this quote:
The Roman oppression is the period in which Jesus is born. And comparing imperialism that was going on in Luke, imperialism was going on when Caesar Augustus sent out a decree that the whole world should be taxed. They weren’t in charge of the world. It sounds like some other governments I know.
That, yes, I can compare that. We have troops stationed all over the world, just like Rome had troops stationed all over the world, because we run the world.
Yes! It is exactly the same. We station troops in our colonies, which we acquired by killing their fighting men and enslaving their women and children, and then we send tax collectors to steal their money and bring it back to America so President Bush can have the fanciest palace of any emperor so far. We force them to donate large amounts of grain and other goods at the point of a sword, and we bring their exotic animals back here to kill in our stadiums just for fun. We force them all to swear allegiance to our empire on pain of death or enslavement. It really is Rome all over again. Thank God for learned historians like Rev. Wright to clue us in to our own depravity and imperialism.
*** Wow. Deal with it indeed. Obama responds.

Can I get an “Amen”??
“AMEN!!!!”
April 29th, 2008 at 11:53 amESTHopechange!
April 29th, 2008 at 11:54 amESTAnd yet the good Rev. conveniently ignores Luke 20.25
“And He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Jesus had no problem with taxes, and I’m not even a Christian and I can understand that.
But then again, I’m a white guy so automatically I’m the most evil of evils - Male and white.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:00 pmESTMake no mistake - Wright is no fool. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
Rev. Wright can’t afford to let Barack Obama get elected, so he’s intentionally throwing bombs. If America elects Obama, Wright’s “angry black man” schtick won’t be nearly as effective. In order for him to be relevant, he NEEDS his audience to believe in their perpetual victimhood. His theology only works when he’s the underdog.
Black Liberation Theology doesn’t need logic to work (obviously). It’s all about how you FEEL.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:10 pmESTWhat scares me is the seemingly normal black people who LIKE this guy. I was reading another blog of a woman who happens to be black and she said she’d love to attend his church. WTF!?! And she’s not psychotic. It scares me. They’re just looking at the surface … not looking to what he’s actually saying.
He’s a complete nutter.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:13 pmESTPure genius, Rachel.
When the appropriatey, (yet ironically) named Mr. White, said “He [Farrakhan] did not make me this color” he is absolutley correct, as his parents were the ones who determined his color.
Which is white.
I keep going back to my original thesis in posts long ago that “blacks” who are very light skinned can have identity problems - proving their “blackness” to other blacks becomes an all-time consuming occupation - and is, by definition, a purely racist endeavor. Mind you, it is not whites who demand that he prove his blackness, so where does the racism truly lie?
Guys like this, who suffer identity crises (Hitler and his Jewish mother?) therefore tend to adopt the most hateful racist rhetoric and “theology.” Is anyone surprised that Cone’s creed precisely mirrors Hitler’s? That lesser races are evil and that they ought to be exterminated?
The fact that so many blacks are willing apologists for this crap is truly frightening. I want to hear these asses condemned in the strongest terms possible…by Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and by all so-called “reverends.” If they don’t condemn this filth, then there can be no doubt as to what they truly stand for.
I won’t hold my breath waiting for the condemnation - nor for the media to point out the fact that Cone, Pastor White, and their aplogists are sick, evil, racist demagogues just like Hitler. The only difference is that they simply lack the troops and the means to put their utopian dreams into action. But they surely possess all the hatred necessary.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:21 pmESTThe Obama campaign must just be absolutely bug fuck nuts over this loony old tool. I wonder how the hell somebody like this can get along in the world. I just cannot get enough of this stupidity!
April 29th, 2008 at 12:24 pmESTVery nicely done! I wonder if “Rev” Wright made Obama hate himself for his whiteness… …since that accounts for a HUGE chunk of his bloodline… …or most all other blacks in this country… …since this country is a big huge melting-pot ‘n stuff… …just a thought.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:28 pmESTIf I were Obama, I’d be mulling ways to have this guy whacked in a way that didn’t point straight to me.
And as for owning up about slavery and what-not…WTF? I’ve been hearing about that since I was a Wee Nipper, and I’m old enough to be Rachl’s father! We’ve been “owning up about slavery and asking for forgiveness” for-freaking-EVER! How do you expect a wound to heal if you can’t stop picking at it?
April 29th, 2008 at 12:29 pmESTCharybdis is absolutely correct. The worst thing that could happen to wright, sharpton, et al, would be for hussein to actually become president of this “racist America”. Then, the tools that the professional “victims” have used and lived off of for so long might - possibly - stop and see that America is not as racist and evil as they have been led to believe. And then the money (and power) fountain dries up. Poor old jesse jackson might even have to get a job! LOL!
April 29th, 2008 at 12:38 pmESTIf there is ever an attempt made on hussein’s life, look to the so-called “leaders” of the black “community” to find the culprit. They are the ones with the most to lose - and the most likely to do whatever they have to in order to protect their empire.[They can't look far enough ahead to see what can be gained from an obama presidency : how much more can be stolen.]
What a buffoon! Not only is he racist, he is sexist: His attitude towards the Moderator, as if she herself were the author of the questions he considers beneath him, floored me.
AS for apologizing for slavery, WTF was the Emancipation Proclamation? Not just mere words, this document acknowledged the wrong and legally redressed it. He wants P.R., not action.

April 29th, 2008 at 1:13 pmESTThis is IT, in a nutshell. Succinctly genius, or genius-ly succinct…whatever, it is the stone cold truth.
What is most worrisome to me is the seemingly “normal” blacks who are nodding their heads to this racist crap. There are folks I know from my son’s baseball team and school that I am looking at with whole new eyes, because I cannot BELIEVE they hold truck with this nutter.
There’s some sort of deranged entitlement that pervades the way these people think, as if it’s OK for them to be totally racist because now it’s THEIR TURN. The truth is that MLK didn’t fight to abolish racism, because his people have perversely turned it around to make it politically correct for them to be as racist as anything MLK ever fought against! It’s sickening.
How come there’s not a HUGE hue and cry from the black community against this divisive and racist “theology”? I’ve asked the same question of the Muslims who refuse to denounce terrorism. I am left to assume that if you’re not against it, you must be FOR it.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:14 pmESTUh, frigger, his name is “Wright”, not “White”.
Or did I miss some subtle sarcasm again? If so, just ignore me.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:15 pmESTFor some inexplicable reason, I like that simile.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:20 pmEST*sniffle* I think I want to have your baby. Great post, Wach. Very well put. Now about being your baby mama …
April 29th, 2008 at 1:24 pmESTA racist is a racist…no matter what their color.
I got called out to a dispute between neighbors one time (im a cop). One neightbor, an average white guy…the epitome of evil, had a restraining order against his neighbors…the whole family…and their associates. Why pray-tell? Cause the mom in said family gave them the family dog she wouldnt care for while dad was gone, and when dad came back he went to AWG’s house, assaulted AWG, and busted into AWG’s house to try and get the dog back. He got charged with assault and especially aggravated burglary (since AWG and his wife were IN THE HOUSE when this douche busted in).
So I go to talk to AWG’s neighbors, and mom is the only one home. Oh by the way, his neighbors are black (as if you didnt see that coming). With absolutely no prompting from me, mom starts whining about how since ‘the carjacking’ people have looked at her differently and she “can feel their hate” (story, supposed ‘outrage’, Klan coms to town). I later learn through her that everything AWG said is true, her husband did assault him and break into his house. Apparently she lied to hubby about the dog, and told him she let the neighbors “borrow” it. She starts blaming AWG, who she said started it after he moved in (makes no sense to me either).
See…her problems are anyones but hers. She just wants hopechange!
April 29th, 2008 at 1:24 pmESTOMG - I was driving in my car when I remembered…his name’s not White - it’s Wright!!
I’m sorry everyone - I had a dumb attack. WayneB, you’re correct, of course.
Still, the rest of my post is OK. I just have Pastor Wright’s White-ness obviously dominating my brain’s activity.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:30 pmEST“Destruction of whiteness”?
April 29th, 2008 at 1:42 pmESTSomebody needs to ask Obama about the Final Solution of the White Problem.
Oh man….did you guys hear O’s apology?!? LOL He’s in deep now. None of Wright’s comments were new yet O is talking like it’s all some shocking surprise. Like he didn’t know his MENTOR was a racist A-hole.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pmESTI noticed this too about Mr. Wright: I’m about the whitest white person I know and he’s barely darker than I am. There are white people darker than he is (especially of Mediterranean descent). So how come he is “black?” Isn’t he much more predominantly white? I just don’t understand. I suppose it is one of the drawback to growing up with out racial prejudice or divide, I just don’t understand the issues (how a nearly white man, with a trace of black is black, instead of white, why the community would claim him as one of their own when he looks far more like me, etcetera).
Of course that doesn’t matter, I’m (to the best of my knowledge) of purely European ancestry, so slavery is my fault and I am to show contrition and beg forgiveness, despite my ancestors being active abolitionists (that was the anti-slavery movement, right?) well ahead of the emancipation proclamation.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pmESTIt should be noted that the good Rev’s so-called “black liberation theology” is cribbed from the original Latin American Catholic “liberation theology” which demands that the church concentrate its efforts on liberating people of the world from poverty and oppression. It was/is something of a lightning rod for Catholic Hispanic women as well. One thing he’s not, and that’s original.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:59 pmESTBut some racists get a pass because of their color.
The terrible thing is that there are actually white people who believe that giving minorities (particularly blacks) “special” rights is A-OK because everything is on a big pendulum. It swung too far one way, so now it has to swing too far the other way, and it will keep doing so until it finally comes to a stop. I shit you not, a white person actually used that as an argument when we were discussing stuff like this.
I can’t even fathom having that much self-hatred.
April 29th, 2008 at 2:00 pmESTHey, don’t be hatin’ on us Detroit GangBangers!
April 29th, 2008 at 2:22 pmESTThings are tough here. Have you seen the unemployment rate in dis house? Sheeet! MoFo’s ain’t got nuttin’ ta steal! We waitin’ for dem gobmnt checks to come in now. Hi times is a-comin’! Deys a’comin’.
My heritage happens to be predominantly white and European. But neither my Irish ancestors nor my German ancestors were here prior to the Civil War. And certainly none of them owned slaves, as they were (1) very poor (2) northerners, and (3) slavery had already been made illegal for the entire Us of A.
And on my mom’s side we have a bit of the Seminole Indian genome. My great-grandmother had just one name, Osceola (obviously named after the original..) The Seminoles were well known for their efforts to free slaves and then allow them to become part of the tribe.
So even though I look like a completely normal white guy, I am absolutely guiltless and free from the sin of White Tyranny. In fact, my kin were either not at all involved in the slave trade, or, at least, a portion of them did what they could to help the black cause.
So I look forward to my Reparations check. The rest of you crackers better pay up, yo.
April 29th, 2008 at 2:59 pmESTI almost spit coffee on my dual monitors. Hi-friggin-larious.
April 29th, 2008 at 3:32 pmESTI have a mixed race stepdaughter and stepson. My wife (their mom) is of norweigan/german ancestry and their (late) father was half white and half black. My stepdaughter looks more like her father, more “black” and my stepson looks like a standard evil white guy. What I find interesting is that my stepdaughter identifies with black people and culture. From what my wife and stepson have told me her father would be seriously disappointed. He did not approve of the hiphop culture that some black people have identified with (he was a radio DJ for years) and he would let her know it if he were still around. She keeps giving me a hard time because also an evil white guy, and a Republican to boot, then I remind her that she’s technically 1/4 black and 3/4 white so get over herself. Once in awhile I’ll walk into the house and catch her listening to country music. That usually gets a comment from me as well.
My heritage is exclusively European and white. Most of my immigrant ancestors landed here before the Civil War. I have one great-great-grandfather who did long service for the Union; I have another who was a captain in the Confederate cavalry.
My great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, a Baltimore ship’s carpenter in the late 1700s, was a slave owner.
Even though my ancestor was a slave owner and that I look like a typical white girl, I am also “absolutely guiltless and free from the sin of White Tyranny.” As far as any reparations from me, you can whistle for it!
April 29th, 2008 at 3:44 pmESTEvery time that dipshit opens his mouth he digs Obama deeper! At least I’d like to think so. You’d think Wright would be smarter then trying to sell that brand of shit, does he really believe this bullshit? REALLY? Because before, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, probably just saying some inflammatory things for shock value to get a reaction. But REALLY?
In my opinion, the moderate reasonable Black people in this country (just like moderate Muslims) have only themselves to blame when idiots like Wright are allowed to represent their whole group in the popular press and in the eyes of other Americans. Why would they let this idiot speak for them? Not call him on it? And even defend him? C’MON I know they are out there! Why aren’t they standing up and calling shenanigans? Black America are the only people who can call out people like Wright without being called a racist and it just boggles the mind that they don’t stand up and say “He does NOT speak for me!”
It seems that Wright HAS gone too far this time though. GOOD!
April 29th, 2008 at 3:45 pmESTAs far as I can tell, evvybuns, the Reparations check you’ll have to write will go to yourself - on account of you having some kin in your past that were Union, and some others Confederate - sorta cancels things out.
But quit trying to use standards of common sense and decency, will ya? Absolutely no one living today can be held responsible for transgressions that occurred hundreds of years ago by completely different people, long dead.
But it won’t stop many from trying - and it is conceivable that those many jerks could make it stick. (Think Affirmative action, Busing, etc. Institutionized and legally affirmed NEW RACISM to counter the effects of the OLD RACISM). It’s still racism, though they cloak it in prettier sounding words.
This is the dream of democracy…(or as Jefferson put it - the tyranny of the majority).
April 29th, 2008 at 4:14 pmESTIncidentally, the new pastor of Trinity Church is comparing Rev. Jeremiah Wright to Jesus Christ.
April 29th, 2008 at 6:20 pmESTAw, you’re no fun at all, frigger!
April 29th, 2008 at 7:27 pmESTMan, I gotta go see a doctor.
My years are advancing. And I just noticed that I wrote “Institutionized” instead of “Institutionalized.” How embarrassing.
And coupled with my earlier faux pas, I am barely able to show my face, (metaphorically speaking). I need a new screen name. Again.
But evvybuns, I can assure you, I am more fun than any one girl can handle.
(God, I hope you’re a girl…)

April 29th, 2008 at 9:26 pmESTI guess I’m still in a little bit of shock that Wright has saturated the airways and been so open with his hatred. He certainly can’t say the media has picked a few snippets from old sermons to misrepresent him and his views. He tossed that defense out the window with his arrogant, hate-filled rants over the past three days.
I agree with Charybdis. I can’t help but think the good Rev is trying his best to make sure Obama’s chance of winning the nomination, much less the White House, is entirely in the crapper. After all, the race warlords (the Revs Sharpton and Jackson) have already agreed that Obama’s black enough…a real black man. If Obama were to win - they’d lose their main rant of America being a racist nation. Colin Powell, Sec. of State Rice, Justice Thomas - well, they aren’t black enough and traitors to their race. The fact they are highly successful is due to them “acting white.” Obama though - they’ve confirmed he’s black enough, so now they have to sabotage his chances of winning to ensure their bank accounts don’t take a hit. And, if they succeed in helping Obama lose the nomination, they can then say, “See! America can’t allow a black man in the white house.”
And I apologize now for giving everyone this visual, but don’t you just know that somewhere, in some hotel in America, Hillary Clinton and her staff were dancing and celebrating as they watched the Obama candidacy derail.
April 29th, 2008 at 9:38 pmESTRev Wright says:
Para says:
Hey motherfucker, I didn’t put you in chains either, but while we’re on the subject, don’t forget that it was African Tribal Chiefs who rounded up slaves from other tribes, and sold the excess to the white Europeans. That’s right, slavery existed long before Uncle Cracker got involved.
I’m reminded of that anti-pot commercial from the 90’s where the kids yells at his father who is interrogating him on where he learned this bad habit ( smokin’ weed).
The kids responds “I learned it from watching you, OKAY???!!!”
So yeah, Reverend, if every white man is responsible for putting you in chains, then so is every former African. You (the Africans) started it. The White man, sadly, simply perfected it.
Not this white man though, despite my lily white ass, I have never enslaved anyone, which is more that I can say for your “flock”, who are mental and emotional slaves to your rhetoric and attempts to keep them lifelong victims, who only “you” can save.
I’m guessing, the only chains you ever wore were in the 1980’s when you sported you Mr. T starter kit.
BTW, I know the rev isn’t a visitor here, so if any of you see him maybe you could pass along my message?
April 30th, 2008 at 5:20 amESTInteresting story and great comments. At first I thought “heck yeah”! when I read what Charybdis and others wrote (Rev. Wright can’t afford to let Barack Obama get elected, so he’s intentionally throwing bombs. If America elects Obama, Wright’s “angry black man” schtick won’t be nearly as effective.) But the more I think about it, the less certain I am that he consciously thinks in those terms. I rather think that he genuinely believes all that stuff and can’t let it go.
If, by some miracle, I am right, then we are talking about cognitive dissonance on an unimaginable scale for Wright and his ilk. That, I think, would actually make them dangerous because one can negotiate with holders of extreme political positions. One can’t negotiate with a nut.
April 30th, 2008 at 7:16 amESTI think Wright and Obama have a symbiotic relationship.
At this point, Obama needs Wright to be as loony* as possible to allow him to disown Wright. Obama said, “I could no more disown him than I can disown the black community,” but he now needs to recant and actually disown him (which he did, yesterday). Wright provides him with the reason to do so on a daily basis.
Wright needs the continued publicity to keep the pews full to support his lifestyle. Nothing like publicity to fill the pews, I always say!**

April 30th, 2008 at 9:06 amESTExactly. No number of apologies and no amount of money will heal Wright and others like him until they are willing to stop, as Buddhist monk Thich Nat Hahn put it, “rehearsing their anger”.
Forgiveness is not conditioned on apology or restitution; true forgiveness is something you do for yourself, so that you can move on.
In the end, I suspect that demogogues like Wright have no interest in forgiveness and reconciliation; as one of the commenters here observed, forgiveness and reconciliation would rob Wright and those like him of power, influence and position.
For them, “apologies” and “reparations” are instruments of punsishment and extortion, not forgiveness and reconciliation.
April 30th, 2008 at 9:33 amESTLet’s not forget that the vast majority of abducted Africans (hey, that’s got a nice, catchy alliterative-ness to it) were sold to Arabs, Persians, Turks, etc., and went east… (Some of the nuttier black conspiracists ones implicitly acknowledge this by trying to paint the slavery of Africans as a conspiracy of Jewish financiers in southern Europe and the Middle East.)
As long as we’re talking Middle East, they should hit the guys with all the oil up for some reparations.
Bumper sticker wanted: “Reparations? When you pry them from my dead, cold fingers.”
April 30th, 2008 at 9:45 amESTI’ve always wondered how the British get off scott free in this whole reparations shtick. For over 200 years Great Britain had slavery in this country. The United States becomes independent and within 2 generations slavery is abolished yet who gets the blame? Not the British.
