Puppy on wheels.

So many people sent me stories about , and since it’s Dog Week, how can I ignore?
Hope, the appropriately named two-legged Maltese puppy gets around by using a specially-designed device which features wheels from a model aeroplane.
The energetic pup uses her hind legs to boost her body forward onto her chest and operate the wheeled prosthetic limbs.
The beloved pooch was born with only two legs and has small wriggling nubs where her front legs should be.
Awwww…so sad and so cute. As amazing as the shitty things people do to each other and animals are, it’s just as amazing to see the lengths we will go to to help. And I want to eat that little puppy for being so sweet.
Well, somebody’s going to say it:
Heart of a Champion!
But she is totally adorable!
June 26th, 2008 at 3:17 pmIt’s actually amazing how they adapt to these sorts of defects.
Fat dog (Sprog) has his tail, and swings it in a full revolution for each stride he takes when he’s going full-tilt boogie — it offsets his missing limb nicely, so I’m glad he wasn’t docked before we got him.
That’s really inventive, and seems to be effective. I’d be curious to see how she jumps/lies down/squats etc, and how the device adapts to her movement, particularly when she needs to “lift” her front paws — probably steps are out, I would assume, and transitioning from one ground surface type to another would be difficult …
Oops, sorry, musing. I have been compelled to adapt to special needs for several goggies, so I just naturally start questioning how best to accomodate.
Oh, and very cute, too. Especially the video.
June 26th, 2008 at 3:18 pmD’ya think maybe Sunny needs one of those? For her belly? Tis bigger than a Maltese!
June 26th, 2008 at 3:40 pmI’ve mentioned my buddy with the rescued pit bulls(and other breeds) before, but I don’t think I’ve ever listed their reasons for needing rescue. Some ‘just’ had energy/emotional issues, but several are physically ’special’ as well:
pit#1 — one front leg is underdeveloped, looks like a little claw attached to her body (I call her “Bat Girl”) — a real sweetie!
pit#2 — also missing a front leg (reason escapes me at the moment) She’s a high energy girl: the older dogs have learned that she will go up their front steps, but not down, so when they tire of her puppy energy, they ditch her!
pit/Dane? cross(probably my favorite dog-not-my-own — don’t tell the others!) — puppy had to have hind leg amputated due to congenital deformity and severe dysplasia (other hip is dysplastic, and I live in fear of going for a visit and not being greeted by the big galoot — to have the hip replaced, though, they’d have to get him to use a trolley for several months, and he weighs about 80 lbs.?)
lab cross — badly broken leg of puppy was untreated, leaving him with one front paw that looks like a seal flipper
All are wonderful dogs, and all their previous owners should kiss the ground my friend walks her dogs on!

Rachel Lucas joins the ranks of Instapundit, the notorious Puppy Blender, in the puppy eating madness that is sweeping the nation.

June 26th, 2008 at 3:57 pmLong while ago on 20/20 I saw a 2-legged golden retriever, both legs on the right side. When inside it had a way of crawling around on the floor, but when it would go for walks, its owner would rig up a sling with a towel, and boy could that dog run!
And somewhere on Youtube is a video of a 2-legged greyhound walking upright on its back legs. It has to keep moving to maintain balance, but it sure has adapted well.
‘Scuse me, need to go get an insulin shot because of the sugary-cuteness overload. I glimpsed at the adoption page for a greyhound rescue before I came here. Oh…..

June 26th, 2008 at 4:29 pmOK, since no one else has said it, TRANSFORMER!
June 26th, 2008 at 4:36 pmGood thing the dog doesn’t belong to Tim ‘the Toolman’ Taylor; he’d probably soup that puppy up with a few thousand extra horsepower.
zzzzzzzzzZZZZZZOOOOOMMMMMM
June 26th, 2008 at 4:41 pm“Was that a greyhound?”
“Nope! Hemi, V-8.”
“Never heard of that breed.”
so…could you substitute ski’s in the winter? what about water ski’s? what about offroad tires? racing tires? Eagle GT’s? What about tank-like tracks….that would be cool.
I can’t show Ida that picture or she’ll want me to saw her legs off and rig up some kind of roller coaster for her…the lazy ass that she is.
June 26th, 2008 at 4:49 pmHey Chinny –
ida’s famous at lol dog, too, in case you didn’t see it when I posted it a few days ago!

RACHEL! You want to eat him!?! LOL!
June 26th, 2008 at 6:39 pmThat’s so cute…
Maybe we should keep Glenn Reynolds away from that picture.
June 26th, 2008 at 6:55 pmOnce you get rid of their frame of reference you can do anything to them.
June 26th, 2008 at 7:28 pm14K, wouldn’t that be Hoverhound?
June 26th, 2008 at 10:10 pmOh come on, isn’t anyone going to let loose and point out the obvious?
She’s a BITCH ON WHEELS!
June 27th, 2008 at 12:11 amThey’re doing amazing things at for animals that are blind, deaf or have mobility . If the wheeled puppy picture makes you smile, those links will make your day.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:58 amDearRachel,
1. Better keep that doggie away from Maggie. She looks too much like delicious Possum Treats (T).
2. If the owner had figured out a way to have “Eye of the Tiger” play as she wheeled herself around, that would have been excellent.
